Liverpool is a large city in the North-West of England, famous for its music scene and night life but which is also home to many other attractions. This is a list of some of the free ones. All of these attractions are suitable for both adults and children.
Firstly, there are several beaches in and around Liverpool. Some of the best ones being Ainsdale and Formby. The oldest iron built pier in Britain can be found at sandy Ainsdale Beach which has a coastguard from Easter to October. Formby Beach is largely unspoilt and hides fossils and footprints thought to date as far back as the Neolithic Era. There is no lifeguard at Formby Beach and swimming is not advised.
As well as the beaches, Liverpool is a beautiful place to go walking. There are networks of footpaths, many of which pass points of interest. There is a free guide to the Heritage Tour (available in English, Polish or Dutch) which can be downloaded from here but it is easy to discover and admire Liverpool’s heritage without having a guide.
Perhaps on of Liverpool’s most famous attractions is Albert Dock. Being popular attraction to visit in itself, Albert Dock is also home to other free attractions including the Tate Liverpool Art and the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The Tate houses twentieth century art including the National Collection of Modern Art in the North of England. At the Maritime Museum, there is much maritime history to be discovered including the story of the Titanic as well as other subjects such as smuggling and slavery. For more information about attractions and events, take a look here.
Another museum is the Prescot Museum. This displays a variety of artwork with changing displays of modern work. For current displays, take a look here.
Finally, there is Sefton Park and Palm House. The Palm House is a grade II listed glass building situated within Sefton Park. The view within and around the Palm House is ever-changing, depending on the time of day and time of year. There is an array of plants from around the world as well as various statues in and around the unusual structure. As well as the Palm House, Sefton Park also contains a children's play area, aviary, "Eros" fountain and Peter Pan statue. For more information about Sefton Park and The Palm House, visit here and here.
