Milam Place is a small neighborhood of single family homes built mostly in the 1920’s and 1930’s. These charming homes sit on large lots in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, zip code 73107.
The northern border is Northwest 23rd Street and the location of Cleveland Elementary School and Taft Middle School. Both are less than a mile from the center of the neighborhood. Northwest Classen High School is about a mile and a straight run north on North May Avenue, the eastern border of the Milam Place neighborhood.
Wayman’s Park is on North Drexel Boulevard which is the western boundary. The park has swings and a play structure for the children.
The Lynwood United Methodist Church is on the corner of North Drexel Boulevard and Northwest 16th Street which is the southern boundary. It is not the only church in this small area; the Northwest Baptist Church owns the whole block on North Drexel Boulevard and Northwest 23rd Street.
While the Milam Place neighborhood is mostly homes, there is a mix of commercial properties surrounding the neighborhood. Residents have access to a bank, fast food eateries and other services. The Wal-mart Neighborhood Market is slightly more than a mile away and within five miles there two Wal-Mart SuperCenters. The premier place for shopping and dining is the Penn Square Mall, four miles northeast of the neighborhood. The mall also features a 10-screen theater.
Will Rogers Park is one of the places for disc golf. Two miles north of the neighborhood, it might be better known for being one of the oldest parks in Oklahoma City and the home of four historic gardens, each featuring a different type of foliage. Closer to home, Denniston Park has wide grass areas for romping and a play structure for the children. The State Fair Park is two miles to the south and the location of the Oklahoma State Fair held every September. It is busy year-round with events and calls itself the “Horse Show Capital of the World”. The Oklahoma River Trails are south of this neighborhood and offer walking, biking, and skating on level asphalt trails along the riverbank.
There are many other recreational activities available to the residents of the Milam Place neighborhood. There is fishing along the river and at Lake Overholser. The lake is also the home of the Route 66 Park with a playground for the children with a map of historic Route 66. The Mother Road followed the north shore of the lake from 1926 to 1958.
Interstate 44 is less than a mile away and Interstate 40 a little more than two miles with easy access. Oklahoma City has various bus routes through the area and the trolleys downtown are free.
There are several golf courses near the neighborhood. At Lake Hefner there are two 18-hole courses that are challenging. The 9-hole course at the James E. Stewart Golf Course is a local favorite.
Downtown Oklahoma City provides more places for fine dining and boutique shopping. There are many cultural events and museums to visit; among them is the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. Visitors and residents enjoy the American Banjo Museum and the Red Earth Museum.
Located in the middle of all that Oklahoma City has to offer, no place is too far away for the the residents of the Milam Place neighborhood.
