Cellphones and travel seem to go hand in hand although it is not always easy to make technical choices about how that works when you cross borders into different countries. Here in Europe, there are providers that cover most of Europe like Orange and Vodaphone, although before traveling to any foreign destination, check with the experts as to which service works in the country you are traveling to and even consider the possibility of satellite if you can justify the expense.
Sometimes when traveling abroad, it is actually cheaper to pick up a pay as you go phone in the country upon arrival than it is to go through all the hassle of worry about whether you phone will work in that country.
Certainly on one of my visits to Tangiers, I was able to pick up a non European phone for very little money indeed and simply top it up with locally bought phone cards. This was the simplest and most cost effective manner to deal with my travel arrangements and cost next to nothing compared with the options available to me in my own country.
