How to calibrate your LCD television

There is a wide range of picture adjustment options available on most, if not all, modern LCD television sets. For viewers to enjoy a finer detail and greater accuracy from the images on their TVs, toying with these options can often be the only way to achieve personal perfection in quality. If you are interested in receiving the best quality picture on your LCD, perhaps calibration is for you. The following step-by-step guide should be helpful in getting you started on calibrating your LCD TV.

1. Redecorate. Think about your ideal atmosphere when watching TV. How do you prefer your lighting when you are watching a movie at home? Although preferences will differ, the best lighting will come from a dim or diffused source behind or adjacent to your TV.

2. Wait. Be sure your TV has had the chance to run for at least an hour before calibrating. Running your TV first will produce the normal temperatures at which your machine runs.

3. Play around. While you wait for your TV to essentially "warm up" play around with the display options and get a feel for the technical terminology. The more knowledge you have about your options, the more accurate your results will be.

4. Research. Your TV may also provide several settings for it's built in backlight. If it is set on the highest degree of brightness, you are likely to experience adverse effects in your vision. In addition, your LCD's longevity is greatly decreased.

5. Use your resources. Often, calibrating by sight alone may not get the most detail or accuracy out of your LCD. Many popular DVDs feature a THX Optimizer which provides a set of patterns that will provide a more thorough calibration.

Whether you choose to calibrate your TV by sight alone or with the help of a home theatre set-up disc with step-by-step instructions, the bottom line is that there is no "perfect" or "right" way to view your TV, so enjoy yourself and make changes according to your personal preferences rather than the opinions of self-proclaimed masters of TV calibration.
