With the NHL season winding down the attention of hockey fans has now turned to the post season's quest for the cup. And this past weekend's match up between the Predators and the Sabres may very well have given us a taste of things to come.
Both clubs sit atop of their respective conferences and figure to go deep into the playoffs provided they can avoid injuries. Their game this past weekend was an exciting back and forth match up which resulted in a Nashville overtime victory.
The Sabres have been a dominant team all season, but a rash of late season injuries threatened to slow their pace. But Buffalo's strength lies as much in their depth as it does their goaltending. Even with numerous injuries to their forwards, the Sabres have managed to remain top in their division and the first seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Predators also feature a litany of young talent, centered around Paul Kariya's team high 72 points and goalie Chris Mason's outstanding .926 save percentage. They're healthy heading down the stretch and figure to go deep into the quest for Lord Stanley's cup.
It's the best time of the year for hockey fans. And with a league full of young, fast and highly skilled players, this year figures to be loads of excitement. The Sabres and Predators are atop of their respective divisions because they have tapped into the formula for success in the "new" NHL. Let's hope both teams make it to the finals so America can see how exciting hockey can be!
