The impact of a negative attitude on your weight loss

by M. L. Kiser

Created on: September 02, 2011

If you think that a negative attitude can’t affect your weight loss, then think again.  Many people have a tendency to binge eat when they are upset, angry or even depressed and it’s often sugary foods or fast foods with empty calories, to which they turn.

The negative attitudes of others can also influence your weight loss.  We all need to feel supported, a part of the group, especially when dieting and it’s necessary for others to provide the support even if it’s no more than offering us a carrot or celery snack rather than those cookies people offer when you visit them.

Many people don’t think that they are being negative, condescending or even offensive when they joke about a person’s weight, talk about them as if they are not there or insult them for the fun of it, but it hurts and has a very negative impact on your ability to continue with your weight loss plans.  It makes you feel depressed, defeated, as if you are engaging in a pointless endeavor.  Such feelings and beliefs are negative and limiting to the individual trying to lose weight.  It sets up a negative environment where you feel hopeless.

If you live and work with people whose attitudes are negative towards your weight, then you are in a toxic environment.  Change it if you can, if not then you will need to learn to deal with other people’s negative attitudes so that they don’t cause you to become more negative or give up on yourself.

This negativity can have another negative impact on your job, work, pay, family life and more.  It can affect family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, anyone who is around you.  It’s a problem, which doesn’t go away unless you learn to deal with it.

When you are negative, upset, depressed or angry it creates stress and negative stress plays a big role in your overall health.  Too much negativity can create enough stress to cause things like high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, as well as, numerous psychological conditions.

Research has shown that peer pressure, especially in teens has a greater impact on their behavior than anything else, especially for those with low self-esteem.  Kids are more prone to want to be a part of the group, to “fit-in” and when they don’t feel like they do then negative attitudes and behaviors are often the result.

For adults, it isn’t
