Wallace and Gromit are at it again, and this time they have converted their Wallaby Street address into a bakery called Top Bun. All is fine and well in the world of bread when our cheese-loving Wallace falls for former Bake-o-Light Girl, Piella Bakewell. As usual, this blond bombshell distracts Wallace from realizing that there is a mystery in the midst.
Ever sly Gromit senses that Wallace is in danger and is hot on the trail to find the culprit. Turns out, he does not have to look too far. Gromit stumbles upon some pretty hefty hints that point the finger at Piella as the baker’s serial killer. Unfortunately for him, an entirely distracted Wallace isn’t listening. Haven’t we seen that from Wallace before? So, after beefing up security in the home by building his own metal detector and confiscating all of the knives and utensils from the home, Gromit ends up muzzled and chained to the kitchen sink by the mesmerized Wallace.
It isn’t until a bag of flower falls on Wallace’s fiancé that he finds out the true demeanor of his has-been bread star. Though he is a little wary when she quickly returns to apologize for her behaviors with a giant cake, his stomach gets the best of him and he is placed in harm’s way once again. It’s a good thing that he always has Gromit, with his new girlfriend, to save the day.
It seems that dogs always get the short end of the stick and in this film, Gromit fits that statement. Gromit’s world is turned upside down when Piella redecorates his room and the rest of the Wallaby Street bakery into a floral nightmare. But Gromit isn’t the only dog on the outs in this movie. Piela’s pooch seems to be as disheveled as a domestic violence victim under the tyrant rule of Piella. It seems that cruelty is not without humor or fairness in the lives of these two dogs, which end up together to the tune of Puppy Love.
This British Claymation comedy from W&G Films is packed with dark themes and light humor. Wallace chases after a once thin and beautiful advertising model, while Gromit chases after a serial killer. However, it is sure to have even the non-Wallace and Gromit fan riveting with laughter. Even so, it might turn the typical Wallace and Gromit fan to the fence because of the lack of original charm that lingered in the previous shorts and feature length film.
