“Tell me again,” Sherry said. “Tell me again and again. Lie if you must but tell me again.”
Jim brushed her dark hair to the side of her face and kissed her forehead. “I love you.” He kissed her cheek and said, “I love you.” “You are the one,” he said as he kissed her lips softly.
It was December, and they celebrated their first Christmas together. Blue Christmas lights were on the tree. In the distance, you could hear carolers. The air was brisk and filled with the smell of evergreen.
“Where have you been?” she asked him. “I’ve needed you all of my life.”
He gave her red roses and a beautiful card that said, “I’ve looked for you forever, and I never want to lose you.”
She gave him a watch and placed it on his wrist. There were snowflakes falling from the sky.
Sherry did not realize that he lied to her. It was all a vicious lie. He did not love her. He pretended to care for her because he needed her money to survive. He had none, and he learned quickly that she was a giver, not a taker.
The temperature was becoming colder. Ice was falling from the sky in sheets.
“You wasted your money on that watch,” Jim told her as he pulled out a knife from inside his leather jacket. “I deserve more from you.” His twisted eyes met hers. She screamed when she saw the knife.
Sherry dug her nails into his wrist. The watch fell to the ground. He had no way of knowing that the next day, the sheriff would find the frozen watch in the snow next to her cold dead body.
