Cleaning a fresh water aquarium may seem a little scary when you have never done it before. The procedure is simple, however, and regular cleanings help to prevent buildup, which in turn, keeps the process from becoming overwhelming. Using the best gadgets can speed up the task while simultaneously aid in cleaning aquariums more effectively.
Cleaning sponge - The main gadget needed for cleaning a freshwater aquarium is a good stiff sponge. Sponges constructed with at least one 'gentle' abrasive side work best at removing scum that gather on decorative aquarium trinkets, along aquarium covers, as well as inside filtration systems. Sponges with mild abrasives are also great for removing algae from all aquarium areas.
Using a clean sponge from home will likely be less expensive than purchasing one from a pet store or department store with a fish center. On the other hand, stores that carry fish supplies usually have various types of sponges, including some built onto handles. Depending on the depth of a home aquarium, using a sponge on a handle might allow for cleaning deeper into the tank without fully immersing your hand or arm.
Unplug electrical devices - Before beginning the cleaning process, play it safe by unplugging all electrical aquarium devices including pumps and filter systems. Do not worry about the fish. They should be fine as long as they do not go more than a couple of hours without aeration. Also, remove the aquarium light as well as the cover. Sit the cover on a folded towel or in a bathtub to prevent water from rolling down to the floor.
Glove usage - If your fish are aggressive, or if you simply prefer, pull a vinyl housecleaning glove onto the hand you plan to immerse into the aquarium water. Although it may be unusual for tropical fish to assault their owners, breeding aquarium fish do not always refrain from getting out of a cleaning hand's way. Vinyl gloves can absorb the force of small to medium sized household fish, and thus, protect your hand from harm. Note here that using a sponge attached to a handle could come in handy with aggressive fish since you would not need to immerse as much of your hand or arm, depending on water depth. This means that utilizing sponges attached to handles could reduce apprehension associated with cleaning aquariums; and thus, might be another reason to select this type of sponge over the handle-less type.
