Statistics agree that quality of life is greatly improved when a senior citizen adopts a dog.  Along with any individual needs of the senior, temperament and dog size are generally the most important considerations.  Before making a purchase for any senior in your life, consider the following breeds that make the list of the best dog breeds for seniors.

1.  Schnauzer:  Not only does the size of this breed make a good choice for a senior, but this dog also loves people.  People love them too because their temperament and personality crave human companionship. Because they have a strong desire to pleasure their owners, they are also easy to train.

2.  Pug:   A small breed that is known for having a big heart.  Playful and out-going by nature, watch them soak up any and all attention directed their way.   Seniors with a lot of time on their hands will find that adopting a pug improves the quality of their life and a lap companion for watching television.

3.  Cocker Spaniel:  This breed has been popular for a long time because they are not high strung nor are they particularly outgoing by nature.  Docile by temperament, the cocker’s patience makes them one of the best breeds for seniors.

4.  Dachsund:   Both the standard dachshund or the miniature sizes work well for any senior looking for a loving dog.  Often referred to as “wiener dogs,” they adjust easily to any environment and make affectionate and friendly companions.

5.  Chihuahua:  Seniors living along will appreciate this breed’s tendency to connect with one person and become protective of them.  They may be small in size, but they can make enough noise that qualifies them as a good watch dog.  They love to “talk” which makes this breed a lively companion.
