How to tell if a job interview went smoothly

by Cherie Camins

Created on: August 29, 2011

You want a job interview to go smoothly because that can be the tipping point for you to get the job. In an economy like ours where it is hard to even get a call to set up an interview, destroying your chances on landing a job is counterproductive.

At the end of any interview, you want to feel good about what went on in there. You do not want to walk out the door, head to your transportation, and have a queasy feeling in your stomach because of something that went wrong.

So what can you do about it? The answer is simple, plenty. Just receiving a phone call to set up an interview is huge. Your potential employers liked what they saw in your application or your resume and they want to more about you. Think of it as a first date. He or she already said yes to meet you and spend time with you. Now it is your mission to make sure to not mess things up.

Dress For Success

You are going into a job interview. It does not matter if the position is the executive assistant to the President himself or a fry cook at a local fast food joint, you want to make your first impression count. To do so, before you even open your mouth, you need to have on the proper attire.

That means the clothes you choose to wear should not have holes in it. Your clothes should not have wrinkles in them and look as if you have slept in them. While it may not be possible for everyone, try and get some sort of outfit that looks business-like - black slacks, collared shirt, black footwear. You can check out the nearest Walmart if your disposable income does not lend itself to high end stores.

With clothes taken care of, now focus on personal grooming. It does not matter how good you may look from afar if the rest of you looks like garbage and you smell like garbage too. With ample time before your interview, take a shower and put on some deodorant. Do not go heavy on the scented products in case it offends the interviewer or interviewers or they are allergic to it. Either way, not a good idea.

As a female, go ahead and use makeup if you have any. Nothing too extreme. Just enough to make you look natural and nothing like a clown. Let your beauty shine through.

Know Your Employer

One of the worst things you could do is go into a job interview and not know anything about the company who may potentially hire you. I have heard stories about interviewees would go in and not even realize what the company does, so could not answer the questions about how to improve the company.

Do not be that person.

I am not talking
