You know the tune, 'Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide'? The global recession has affected us all in some way or another in its far reaching manor. Times are lean all over. However, skipping around might be necessary during this stalled global economy. If one can't put food on the table maybe relocating is the answer. But, moving to greener pastures is hard to find. I didn't find it. Luckily I'm at a retirement age of 56 years old and have gray hair to prove it. I live independently within my own devices. In a few years I should look into retirement living but plan to stay where I am now because I'm under doctor's care which requires medication. It would be very hard for me to live without it. They have good doctors here in town with a decent hospital all within a few minutes drive from my home. I've been an inpatient at the hospital more than a couple of times.
I've been on Disability for 15 years now and I was cut in both COLA and case management services these past 2 years. I have to stay within the US to collect my Disability checks and I can't move abroad. I lived in Mid-Michigan since I was 33 years old but lived in the Detroit suburbs before that. Moving away from the Detroit area didn't improve my job prospects at all. In Mid-Michigan there is less business opportunity here along with less job opportunity. I was clearly no better off living here except that the cost of living is lower than in the Detroit area. Although, this area has numerous Colleges and Universities to choose from, I attended Saginaw Valley State University and Delta College not too far from my apartment.
When I made the move to a smaller town I was put on Disability after being unsuccessful in the job market at age 40. But, at least I have skills that I learned from College where I put my hobbies to work by donating both my time and writing. And, I have written articles reflecting the global recession we are now experiencing including this one. There are less success stories in these lean times. At least I have my College experiences to fall back on if not at a regular job. I like to keep my skill level up by volunteering and donating. I have many hobbies including a 'media center' in my living room. There, I manage my Internet computer, music CDs, photography and the HDTV cable networks. I have registered for 'email alerts' for breaking News stories along
