This is an interesting question, as I have read many of the articles posted, I have come to one realization, the rational thinking of Americans when it comes to buying domestic or import is not directly related to the quality of the manufacturing of the vehicle, but to the perception of the mass public that an import is more reliable and more efficiently built then what the car truly is.
I have had many cars during my life span and I am only 35 years old. My first car was an 84 Nissan Sentra, nice little car, not bad on gas mileage, but died after only 100,000 miles, why? My second car, an '89 Chevrolet Beretta, was the best car I ever owned, I could make a gas tank last me a month, the car handled great in the snow, and after 10 years of use still had its original clutch with over 140,000 miles, showing no signs of slippage! Eventually I had to let go of the Beretta because I was hit by someone who ran a red light, since then, I have owned an '88 Chevrolet Camaro, and a '92 Pontiac Bonneville. My latest vehicle is a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged. I have had this vehicle one year, and have not experienced any issues with it. Quality built, I would say "yes", dependable, extremely! How about gas mileage, the car is rated at 23 City and 29 Highway, know what I have experienced, 27 City and 32 Highway! Not bad for a Supercharged Engine!
Returning to why don't people buy American cars anymore? Since every other article has been subjective, then I will continue the trend with my opinions; the reason is because of the attitude and opinions that are passed on from generation to generation. For instance, many of the American cars I have owned have been extremely dependable, so my kids learn this from me, when they grow up, guess what they are going to buy? That's right, an American car! Opinions matter, and if you don't believe me, read every article again, each one is extremely subjective. Why do imports hold their value after 100,000 to 200,000 miles? Again it's all based on opinions, because the experts agree that imports keep their value longer, then the mass public also has to agree, now everyone's in agreement. All you need is one or two bad experiences with a domestic to say they are not dependable, but what about the majority of American vehicles that are on the road, are they not dependable, do they not get the owner from point A to point B on the daily. And what about the individuals that have a bad experience with an import,
