The fashion of SXSW Music Festival in Austin

Last week, music lovers from around the world united in the live music capitol of the world for a week of emerging artists, international groups, and old favorites. As the city teemed with musical creativity, it also ushered in incredible fashion. Indie hipsters, punk rockers, hippies, deadheads, journalists and music biz managers took to the streets sporting all sorts of great looks. Here are my faves:

-Cowboy boots. Still hot, especially in Texas. (Do they EVER go out of style in Texas?) Pair them in or out of jeans, with skirts, dresses or shorts (love this!).

-Ladies, three words: Get A Dress. Dresses are the new jeans. You can wear them anywhere, anytime. I saw them all week, in the sun and in the rainy gray weather. Short purple ones to cover up bikinis. Billowy ones to shows and restaurants. Wear them with flats, sandals, wedges, platforms, flip flops, boots.

-Necklaces that take the stage. Chunky plastic beads, dainty mementos layered on top of one another, interesting pendants all dangled at longer lengths, giving any outfit a nice spruce.

-Messy hair. Not unkempt messy, but tousled, "I just threw this up on my way out the door" hair. Wear it down with bangs or a dramatic part, or up with wavy clumps, volume, and tousled ends.

-Shorts with anything. Shorts are still in, so pair them up with sweaters, sweatshirts, tank tops, long camisoles, tunics or t-shirts. But add fancy shoes to give a polished, finished look. Whether they are flat patent peep-toes, strappy wedges, or canvas closed-toe espadrilles, they add a stylish accent to a formerly dressed-down dud.

The overall look is one of laid-back style with ironic accents and a comfortable air. It would be something that can take you from the store to dinner to a concert. It shouldn't look forced, but rather like you picked some stuff out of your closet and threw on a bangle bracelet. Make-up is minimal, barely there. Hair is VERY casual. Bags are big and bright. The world is a sleepy, laid-back, no rush place.
