and the people there are very supportive.
4) Don't be afraid of feedback: as a webcomicer, you are always needing to improve. Even Snark or mean spirited critics can actually be your best friends because they challenge you to grow and get better as an artist even if it is to Shut them up.
5) There is No such thing as bad press: One of My most proud moments is when My own web comic made it to the "Portal of Evil" site where I got lambasted and roasted alive. However, it got my comic a ton of exposure and people checked it out even if it is just to rip on my art.
6) Equipment: One of the beauties of putting out web comics is you don't need a million dollar budget to do it. I usually get my supplies from the local 99 cent store, this includes pencils, Pens, Paper and art pads. I then sketch my work ink it then scan it where I add color. There are tons of art programs available for free download like GIMP, PIXIA, and many others that will allow you to add special effects and even animation. The comics can be as complicated or as simple as you like. Remember it is YOUR web comic.
7) set a schedule: This is one of the few things that I personally do. Out of the three webcomics I produce, One is set for a MWF schedule the other is on a T&Th schedule while the third I work on at my leisure. this allows me to work on different stories while not burning out on either one. Not everyone can keep this pace but hey do what works for you.
8)Have Fun: work on stories that you enjoy. Personally I like creating "Adult" Web comics, but that doesn't mean you have to. there are plenty of Family friendly artists out there who tell AWESOME stories. What ever genre you come up with make sure that you let people know what they are in for. Drunk Duck has a rating system that works extremely well while comic genesis allows you the freedom to work on your homepage and add the ratings in that way.
9)Advertise, Advertise, Advertise: There are plenty of forums and web comic sites where you can walk up and say "HEY LOOKIT WHAT I DID!". Keep some index cards of with the address of your web comic and give them out to friends family, loved ones etc. It also helps if you go to comic conventions, you will get to meet alot of the pros of the comic industry. Take the time to network and get to know people. Offer to exchange links with people and promote webcomics that you think are cool, most folks will return the favor, if they don't well move on to the next artist and keep plugging away.
10) Keep another site to showcase your artwork. Sometimes you want to draw other things besides your web comic. I would suggest going to http://www.deviantart.com and setting up an account there, you can show case your art and even make some money off it by selling prints.
11) Set up a place where people can get in touch with you. E-mail is great but a Yahoo-group or a Google or MSN community can go along way, so can live journal. this way the fans can keep in touch with you and let you know how the story line is going from their perspective.
12) Last but by no means least: Have fun...enjoy yourself and show some respect to other folks. the Love you give to others will be the love you get back.
