How to make a beaded choker

Perhaps one of the most elegant pieces of jewelry is the pearl beaded choker. The main reason they are expensive to buy is not the cost of the pearls, but instead the time to knot the thread between the pearls. Here is how to make a beaded pearl choker for a fraction of the cost and very little work.

Gather together a strand of similar size, shape and colored pearls; one silver hook clasp; silver lined clear seed beads; one silver lined clear bead, slightly larger than the pearls; beading wire; crimping pliers; wire cutters; and crimps.

1. Cut a piece of beading wire four inches (10 cm) longer than the circumference of the neck. If you would like a longer tail to hang in the back, add 2 inches (5 cm).

2. String the clear bead and one seed. Pass the wire back through the clear bead and pull tightly, leaving 1/4 inch (6 mm) tail to crimp.

3. Slide two crimps onto both strands of wire. Using crimping pliers, crush crimps.

4. String one seed, one pearl. Repeat until beads fill to within 1/2 inch (12 mm) of the end of the wire. String one seed.

5. String two crimps. Slide on hook clasp. Run wire back through crimps and seed. Using crimping pliers, pull wire close, but no so tight as to make the choker stiff.

6. Crush crimps. Trim wire end with wire cutters.

The hook fits between the pearls over one of the seeds wherever it is most comfortable. This pattern is great for black, white, cream or rainbow pearls. If you like pinker pearls, use amber lined seeds and a copper clasp. For some added glitz, try a rhinestone bead or a pearl beaded bead as the end!

When everyone compliments your lovely creation, smile; They do not need to know that you did not spend a fortune to look like a million dollars!
