Adult Acne: Causes and Treatments

Just when you think your teen years are in your distant past you are faced with what you had always considered a “Youth” problem as it flairs up in your current life. Acne can show up at any time of your life and disrupt your daily happiness. As a teen, you experienced acne and you were not surprised because it is a common fact that acne can come from hormonal changes. As an adult, you do not expect to find that acne is once again showing itself on your skin. In adulthood you are much better at skin care, eating habits and makeup choices so it does not always make sense that acne waited to bother you until now.

There are a number of causes thought to bring on this new onslaught of adult acme. Stress is an ongoing factor that can bring on cases of acne as it increases the production of the male hormone called androgen. Oral contraceptives are also a source of concern when it comes to an outbreak of acne in women because they contain progesterone. Some people believe that acne is caused by food choices such as fried foods or chocolates. Adults who eat a well balanced diet and are cautious of the items they consume do have clearer and healthier skin most of the time but it does not always stop acne. Constant and rough washing of the face with a cloth will wash away the natural oils that are used to protect the skin, it is suggested that a good PH balanced soap and once or twice a day soft washing will do an adequate job.

Choosing a good oil free foundation is also important so that you are not adding excess oil to your skin and causing more blockages. You need to always wash your face before bed and not leave makeup covering the pores for long periods or it may soak in and cause irritation.
