Tips for archiving your MP3s

When I first had a computer, it was a little hit and miss where I would store certain tracks, and little by little as my experience has grown, I now have many thousands of MP3 tracks on my computer, which I constantly change over to my MP3 player.

Finding them was getting to be a chore. I would try and find them with the search tool, and came across duplicate files, and all kinds of mix ups, and upon buying my new computer decided it was time to have a clean up of all my files.

Storage

By putting each of my MP3s into different categories or themes, what I was doing was putting like music together, so that making compilations for my MP3 player was simple and the tracks could easily be found.

MP3 doesn't take up a huge amount of space, though I decided that by keeping them on my separate hard drive, I could create files for each of the different themes, and inside those files, alphabetical files containing whole albums of MP3.

This way accessing them is simple, and making albums made much more easy than it had been with all the files muddled. Chosing genres was simple, and I labelled all the files as follows :

60's
70's
80's
pre sixties
hip hop
rock
classics
opera
guitar (rock)
guitar (accoustic)
slows
speed music
world music

and little by little increased the genres as I increased the size of my library. These are easily accessible on my computer by plugging in the second drive, do not take up space on my main hard drive, and are neatly packaged so that I can find them quickly as and when the mood changes.

It works for me, and may help you to organize your MP3's and improve your experience of storing MP3 files.
