Unfortunately arthritis is one of the most prevalent diseases affecting mostly elderly people. As the body ages, joints, muscles and bone density decrease in their ability to perform as they once did. Osteoarthritis is the most common type, known as the “wear and tear” arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is another well-known form that often results in joint replacement.
There are many different herbs and plants that have been used for centuries to relieve the symptoms of arthritis. These plants have properties that help relieve the stiffness and soreness that accompanies this disease.
Alfalfa tea has been used for centuries to treat the stiffness and pain. It contains many minerals that are needed by the human body. It is suggested that the tea form and not the powder be used. Drink the tea for two weeks and then wait seven days before starting the treatment again. Some research suggests that eating alfalfa or using too much in the tea can cause symptoms similar to Lupus.
Black Cohosh has been used to treat symptoms of menopause. It has anti-inflammatory properties which also relieve the pain and stiffness of arthritis. The root is the part that is used to make the tea. Again it is suggested that the tea be used for two or three weeks, a break of seven days, and then treatment started again.
Certain parts of the celery plant are used for medicinal treatments. Boil the seeds in a tea and drink several times a day during severe attacks of arthritis. Celery seeds alone have 25 anti-inflammatory compounds, contain many minerals and have a large amount of potassium. Potassium deficiency has been diagnosed in a number of cases of arthritis and could very well be a trigger for this disease in many people.
Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom salts) is absorbed through the skin. It is one of the most important minerals that the human body needs to function well. This mineral also has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic compounds which can be absorbed through taking a hot bath with these salts. The heat of the water combined with the minerals helps reduce inflammation and ease joint pain.
Chamomile tea has been used frequently over the decades to treat anxiety, panic attacks, heartburn, morning and motion sickness, colic, IBS, burns, pink eye, diaper rash, and arthritis symptoms. Its anti-inflammatory properties sooth the joints and reduce swelling, which reduces pain and allows for increased range of motion.
Flaxseed is another herb that is used to treat many symptoms. Not only does it treat high cholesterol, high blood pressure, digestive problems, chronic coughs, bronchitis and emphysema, but its anti-inflammatory properties are great for flair ups of arthritis.
Other herbs and plants that have properties for treating the symptoms of arthritis include, but are not limited to Angelica, Devil’s Claw, Bogbean, White Willow, Ginger, Boswellia, Feverfew, Wild Cucumber bark, Wild Yam, Ginseng, Oregano, Rosemary, Sesame Seeds and Stinging Nettle.
Some of these are ordinary herbs and spices that are used in everyday cooking. Others can be raised in the outdoor garden, an herb garden, or purchased at the closest health food or herb shop. The advice of an herbalist should be sought before using any unfamiliar herb or plant. Advice of a physician should be sought if the patient is on prescription medications as some herbs can interact with several drugs.
