first off, rechargeable batteries are the way to go in almost all cases. if your camera usage is anything less than sparing then rechargeable batteries are definitely the answer, if not purely for the cost of standard batteries.
The most important question now becomes focused on which type of battery to use. I would highly recomend keeping two sets of batteries assigned for your camera rather than one as you never run the risk of running out.
1) rechargeable alkaline batteries are not often a good choice. If you are an amazingly sparing user of your camera and would prefer a battery that while producing about an extra 10-20% battery life, will only recharge properly up to twenty times, as opposed to up to 1000 with an acid-rechargeable battery. Thus not the best choice if you plan on using your camera much.
2)Ni-Cd (Nickel-Cadmium) rechargeable batteries are the type which are most easily found in AA and AAA sizes and normally last for around 1000 recharges and will operate a standard flash camera relatively well, and as they are cheaper than other forms of acid batteries.
3)finally, Nickel-metal hydride batteries. These are for the camera enthusiasts of us out there, normally possessing a capacity up to 4 times greater than a standard Ni-Cd and also rechargeable up to about 1000 times, despite the fact that they can cost up to three times more, will recharge in only a slightly longer time, and will provide higher performance to cameras with multiple, or higher powered flashes.
In effect, for high performance at a slightly higher cost or if you possess a camera with a high powered flash or multiple accessories, then a nickel-metal hydride battery is for you
if not, even if you use your camera regularly a Ni-Cd rechargeable battery should do fine.
