Benefits of Ylang Ylang
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata var. genuina) is a tall, tropical tree that blooms with large, delicate flowers in shades of yellow, mauve and pink. The name ylang ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang) is derived originally from Tagalog, either from the word ilang meaning "wilderness" or the word ilang-ilan meaning "rare." A more widely accepted translation is the Malaysian "flower of flowers." The plant is native to the Philippines, Indonesia and tropical Asia, and its fragrance is described as an intensely sweet, soft, heady floral that has a slightly spicy scent and a creamy-rich top note.
Of all the essential oils, ylang ylang is one of the best at relaxing, calming and soothing both mind and body as it offers both sedative and euphoric effects. It is reported that simply sniffing its scent can lower blood pressure, reduce mental stress and make one feel free from nervous tension and depression. When this oil is added to a bath or massage, the relaxation is greatly enhanced.
Ylang ylang oil is used widely in perfumes that have oriental or floral themes and it blends well with most other floral, fruit and wood smells. Because of its reputation as an aphrodisiac, ylang ylang flowers are spread on the beds of newlywed couples in Indonesia and in the Philippines, its flowers are strung into necklaces (leis) and worn by women and used to adorn religious images.
While most people the find ylang ylang to be pleasantly heady, it is a very strongly scented oil and can easily become too much. Reports of nausea and headaches have been reported with overuse of this scent, so moderation is important.
