Best ways to decrease anxiety

Anxiety is a common feeling experienced by everyone from time to time.  Often, a stressful event will provoke anxious feelings in those involved. These symptoms may be felt as persistent worrisome thoughts or, in severe cases, may include physical symptoms - racing heartbeat, tension throughout the body, increased adrenaline, etc.

There are many things that can be done to reduce and/or eliminate anxiety. While some are more complex than others, I have included the top five ways to reduce anxiety below:

EXERCISE

In addition to being good for overall health and appearance, studies have shown that routine exercise can be helpful in reducing anxiety and stress.

One reason that exercise is helpful in reducing anxiety is that it gives you something else to think about other than whatever is causing you to feel anxious.  Exercise, also, causes the body to produce hormones called endorphins. Endorphins are the body's natural painkillers.

As you exercise more, and more endorphins are produced, the better you will feel and the better mood you will be in.

It is recommended that you choose an exercise that you enjoy, so that you will stick with it.  Some suggested activities are: basketball, tennis, swimming or bicycling.

GO FOR A WALK

Going for a walk can be relaxing and can also be helpful when you need to get away from a stressful situation for a little while.  Walking gives you the opportunity to think over things that are bothering you or to simply clear your mind.

Often, going for a short walk will give you enough time away from a situation, allowing you to be able to develop a clearer perspective regarding the situation.

LISTEN TO MUSIC

Many people find listening to music to be relaxing, which is why it is a good method for reducing stress.  Music gives you something else for your mind to focus on as well as generally allowing you to feel at ease.

It is important to keep in mind that not all music is helpful in reducing anxiety.  Heavy metal, loud rock or rap music tends to make a person feel more tense and on edge.  Sad or depressing songs may not be the best choice either.  Instead, find some easy listening or upbeat music.

KEEP A JOURNAL

Keeping a journal is a great method for reducing anxiety.  A journal is a place where you can write your private thoughts, including those things you may never say out loud.  Writing out your thoughts helps you put things into perspective. In the process, you may discover a new way of looking at a stressful situation. In the very least, you will have been able to clear your mind of those thoughts that have been making you anxious.

TAKE A HOT BATH

Taking a hot bath is a great way to reduce anxiety. You can fill the tub with just hot water or add some scented salts.

The reason this method works so well is because the hot water tends to relax tense muscles, allowing the body to relax.  At the same time, you are able to clear and relax your mind.

If anxiety is persistent over a period of time or interferes with daily activities, you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder.  Seek the help of a medical professional to discuss your symptoms and set up a treatment program that works for you.
