Poetry: Belonging

by Angel Liu

Created on: August 11, 2011

to the breath i belong

you are the breath
i lost a long time ago
somewhere deep in my body
the gasp that you are
wandered away and I'd forgotten.

once in a while I remember
when I am awed by all I survey
from the craggy seat
of my silent mountain, so used am i
to wallowing in the mist

that i forget you are there.
i grasp at you but with good humor

for my intense fear, tell myself
you can't be real,
that I dreamed you through

the treachery of all my sorrows,
made your name up
as my tongue twisted and froze in cries
and the lies of reason
had crazed me

with enough torment
so I make an effort to look
all regular, to justify
my amnesia and my blindness
because pretending is the norm

and I suck at it big time.
You do too.  So you come out
of the Wilds of Fate to
fill me, the acid of fruit and flowers,
the knife of life

you bite and bite
till you make me spill
and throb your name like a song,
then i am there again
in the humid world

of your skin against mine,
the insensibility of wanting
neither of us can avoid,
the forever temptation
of thinking that maybe

with you, I belong.
