A hidden hand
That weaves a web
Among the crooked streets of chance
And plays upon
Those silken strings;
A dark and terrible chord
Try as we might
To live in the sun
It routinely slips away
Swallowed by the purring night
Where only starlight dares to breathe
Too far away to care
Another daybreak may appear
For some, but not for all
There is no favorite child;
No exceptions, no mistakes
Only one relentless fate
Reserved for each
