Acing an accounting interview is possible as long as you cover the fundamentals. If you have been called in for an accounting interview, it means that the first part of your work has been done - your CV has been shortlisted and your potential employer wants to meet you in person. It is imperative to nail the interview to secure an accounting job offer.

Get to know the process

Each firm will have its own recruiting process, be it for an experienced accountant or for a graduate looking for his or her first job. Smaller firms may only have two or three rounds of interviews; the Big Four accounting firms (PWC, Ernst & Young, KPMG and Deloitte) will have many more hoops to jump through. Research the steps in the interview process and prepare for them. For example, some accounting firms may require candidates to undergo psychometric testing or group interviews. Knowing what comes next will allow you to handle the interview better.

Present well

First impressions count. All the normal rules of interviews apply in the accounting world. Arrive about 15 minutes early, maintain eye contact, and choose to wear a conservative outfit. Presentation matters, so make sure that your fingernails are clean and your shirt is pressed. Don't interrupt and be mindful of your body language during the interview. Remember to bring whatever documents you require, such as academic transcripts, work visas and extra copies of your CV. File them neatly in a folder and remember to switch your phone off before the interview starts.

Know your industry

Accounting is a broad field and accountants work in a diverse range of industries. You may be interviewing for a role in commerce, finance, media, entertainment, consumer goods or services. Knowing your industry will help you stand out from the other candidates. Research recent news that affects the area as a whole. Has there been new regulations, competition or developments in the related field? Hot button topics such as conversion to International Financial Reporting Standards, reporting requirements for small to medium enterprises, developments in tax accounting rules - these are all issues that demonstrate your knowledge and awareness of the accounting industry.

Research your potential employer

To demonstrate that you are interested in working for a potential employer, you must show engagement. The best way to do this is by conducting research on their products,
