Flash fiction: At the bus station

And so she waited... patiently, silently at the bus station, and she was alone. It was pouring that day, he didn't show up. She didn't see him, not even his shadow. Buses came and gone. She sat on the bench until the rain stopped, when the day slowly turned to evening.

Then appeared a young man of twenties with a backpack. He saw her staring blankly into space and a luggage stayed quietly on her side. He wondered if the woman had missed her bus. Out of curiosity, he approached her.

"Hello," he greeted. No response. "Are you okay? Did you miss the bus?" he asked politely.

Within a few minutes, she blinked, then shook her head.

"Are you waiting for someone?" he asked again.

She cried.

Panicked as he thought he would, he quickly search for his handkerchief and handed over to her. "I'm sorry," he said.

She gently pressed the fabric over her nose and mouth. The handkerchief was clean with mild scent of soap. A few moment later she calmed down and muttered a soft "Thank you."

"He didn't show up today," she spoke. "We had a fight a week ago. It was because of my dishonesty and jealousy, and his ignorance, I shouted at him for being insensitive. And then he left without a word. A few days later he showed up and apologized. He suggested to go for a trip and asked to meet him here six in the morning today. But he didn't show up at all."

Silence took over but only for a moment.

"People make mistakes. Maybe he doesn't know how to face the problem of being insensitive; or just that, he wishes for you to understand how hurt he felt being left out alone."

"What should I do then?"

"Just go for a lone trip for a couple of days. It is okay to be selfish for a while to clear your mind."

A bus stopped by. Before goodbye, he said, "I'm Adam."

The woman smiled. Adam wondered why. As he stepped into the bus, he heard her and a smile painted all over his face. Who would've thought moment like this could happen to two people at the bus station? He waved as the bus departed, and the sound of her voice rang in his head...

"I'm Eve."
