For many working parents, day care centers are a normal part of life, and somewhat of a home away from home for their children during the work day. While this arrangement works for many families, for others it isn't the best choice. Day care centers as a method of child care has its advantages and disadvantages, and while it may be ideal for some parents, for others it could be anything but.

Advantage: Hours of Operation and Holidays
Most day care centers have long hours of operation, some opening as early as 7 AM. This is important to many parents who start their work day early or have a long commute which requires an early start. Also, many day centers are open late, or have a late pick up option for parents. This could be a deciding factor for many parents when choosing childcare. In addition, most day care centers are open on holidays, which is a definite plus for parents who also work when many other parents get the day off.

Disadvantage: Evenings and Weekends
While the hours of operation are great at most day cares, there are some which are only in operation from Monday to Friday, and while this may be all that's required in some situations, it isn't for all working parents, many of which are required to work weekends. Evenings can also be a problem for many parents, who's work day stretches out into the evening.

Advantage: Circle of Friends
Because day care centers are usually filled with children of various ages, children have a constant circle of friends to play with, which makes for active, fun filled days. Not only is this fun for the child, it can also be beneficial in their social development; their skills in dealing with their peers, sharing, communication, and more.

Disadvantage: Lack of One on One Care
Daycare centers offer a great place for kids to play and socialize with other children in a large group setting. However, with large groups of children, the attention and focus of the caregivers is shared, and this can cause a lack of one on one care and interaction with each child.

Advantage: Affordable Childcare
Most often, daycare centers are an affordable option as opposed to private childcare. When paying a childcare provider to come into the home of the child, minimum wage hourly rate is a basic requirement, and some sitters require even more. This can add up to a hefty cost for childcare. Daycare offers a much more affordable alternative.

Disadvantage: Less Quality of Care
Sometimes, you get what you pay for, and the same can sometimes be said for daycare centers. With a lower price tag can sometimes come a lower standard of quality care. This is not always the case, but can be, and knowing what you are getting for your dollar in terms of care is very important, as all parents want nothing but the best care for their children.

The best way to make a decision about your child care options is to way the pros and cons, and if after doing so the choice is that of a daycare center it is important to do your research. Ask questions, talk to other parents who have children at the center, ask for credentials, and if need be, ask for letters of conduct on the employees. Choosing childcare can be stressful, but with the right knowledge, it can be a option that works perfectly for both parents and children.
