Flash fiction: A family trip

by Elvina C.

Created on: August 08, 2011

Penny, a teenager of 16, dislikes vacation; especially the one that involves with family. To her, there's nothing good about vacation. Nevertheless for today, she's on a family trip to London of snowing season.

"Penny," Mother calls. "Wake up, girl. You're going to miss the snow."

"Mother, I'm not a girl," Penny mumbles, waking up. "Please stop calling me that."

Penny walks toward the window, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Once her eyes adjust to the sight before her, she's awe by the scenery. "I thought it was autumn," she thinks, but audibly that her little brother could respond. "Maybe you should lift your head up once in a while. Stop at whatever you do or self-blaming for whatever you've done, and observe the changes around you."

Words absorb into Penny's mind. Brother might be the annoying brat, but he's right. Pushing her thoughts aside, seeing snow for the first time really gives her a great lesson. Just as her mind starts to drift into unknown fantasy, Brother's voice fills her ears again.

"I wonder why they called the fairy tale princess 'Snow White'," Brother says repulsively.

"Because her skin is as white as snow," Penny answers as a matter of fact.

"Then she should move to our tropical home."

"And I wonder why is that..."

"Because with our hometown that owns 365 days of summer season, she will need to get a tan before I declare her as the princess without pigment."

"You're disgusting."

"I agree on that, which is why I am your brother. If you are able to be colorful, then why bother staying colorless. It shouldn't hurt to compare a colorful picture with a colorless one. Sometimes, you just need to learn the benefits of it. Otherwise, you're just going to miss the greatest scenery of your life."

For a teenager as stubborn as herself, she hardly listen to anyone. But her brother's words somehow give her a deeper thought. Looking at the snow once more, she smiles and says, "My mind might as well as blank as snow. I will lift up my head today before I miss the great scenery of my life."

With that, she runs to the kitchen of this little cottage her father rented a month ago, and learns to enjoy a cup of steamy tea.
