Oregon has several universities that college students can choose from.  Each one is unique in what it offers its students.  Here is a guide to Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon.

The History and Location

Western Oregon University was established in 1856, and today it is Oregon's oldest university.  It began as a normal school to train high school graduates to become teachers.  The university is located near the center of the Willamette Valley an hour and fifteen minutes from Portland and just 20 minutes from Salem.

The Students

There are over 6,000 undergraduate students and some 400 graduate students that attend Western Oregon University today.  The majority of the students are residents of Oregon, but out-of-state students can attend, too, for a price.  Students at WOU enjoy the small town feel and clean air to breathe.

Admission

In order to apply at WOU, students must have graduated from an accredited high school with a minimum of a 2.75 grade point average.   Three credits in science, three in math, four in English, two in a foreign language and three in social science with a minimum of a C- grade average are required.  If a student cannot meet these requirements, there are other options available.

Yearly Expenses

Students who live in Oregon pay $20,295 a year while out-of-state students pay $32,772.  Those who live at home pay $13,404.  Students from western states that qualify for the Western Undergraduate Exchange program receive a considerable discount on tuition.

Financing College

Students who can show that they have a financial need can take part in the university's work study program.  Students are allowed to work twenty hours a week on campus during the school year and up to forty hours during vacations or during the summer.  Grants, scholarships and loans are also available.  Those who have served in the military can use their veteran benefits to help defray the cost.

Academics

Western Oregon University has become well-known for its preparation and formation of teachers.  The university is divided into the College of Education and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  WOU does not offer degrees in more technical types of majors such as engineering or zoology.

International Studies

Students at WOU have the opportunity to study abroad in an exchange program with approved universities in other countries.   International students also have the opportunity to study at WOU.  All of this is possible because of the desire of faculty and students to have an impact in other countries.
