How to find out if your kids have a learning disability

How to find out if your kids have a learning difficulty is of immense importance if you want to develop your kids to their fullest potential. Children of today face intense competition because of the demands of a more educated society. No child is born stupid. Every child has the potential to excel, depending to how they are nurtured from young.

The first possible indication at a young age will be the milestones in their physical development. Although some boys choose not to speak much until after the age of three years, an indication of a possible learning difficulty will be whether they are able to meet these milestones. These indications include the age they start walking, their muscle tone and when they start talking.

Another indication will be how they perform in school academically. If they are failing from Grade One when everybody else are passing, it could be that they need the after school support that other students are getting that they are not. It could also mean that they have a learning difficulty. Indications will include their language and mathematical abilities.

If despite having the appropriate after school support in their learning, your kids are still failing, it is likely that your kids have a learning difficulty that their kindergarten teachers are not able to detect. Because some learning difficulties are only detectable past certain milestones, it is not easy to determine them.

The type of errors that your kids are making in their school work can be indicative of their learning difficulties. For example, their letters are written as mirror images, or upside-down, or they have extreme difficulties in copying something from the board. These difficulties could be signs of a neurological disorder such as Dyslexia, the difficulty in reading because their letters will all get scrambled in their brains.

If your kids are unable to add despite you getting them to repeat many times over, despite them moving Popsicle sticks and bread tabs, it is likely that they suffer from Discalculia, a brain disorder that prevents them from understanding Mathematical concepts as easily as others their age.

A possible source of information is your kids' teachers, who are able to compare your kids' performance with their peers'. Try not to respond negatively if you are given unpleasant comments from your kids' teachers. Employ a home tutor if you can afford it, or send your kids to extra lessons.
