Reflections: On the Antichrist

by Frances Ruocco

Created on: August 07, 2011

Since Jesus walked the earth and was crucified mankind has always waited for the anti-Christ to appear.

Why even the apostles themselves probably kept thinking and saying to each other that “now" was the time when the anti-Christ was walking among them, or "today" is the day when Jesus is going to return again and when He didn’t show up that day they would say “tomorrow” he will be here to take care of "Herod" and the Romans.  After all one of them has to be the anti-Christ.

Perhaps when all the others were gone John looked at the times, events and the weather and thought I know Jesus is coming soon, isn't he?  Maybe Nero was the anti-Christ, after all didn't he play the violin as Rome burned? Why isn't the burning of Rome the revenge that we all wanted?

And so it has gone throughout history, wherever Christians have walked from town to town, setting up Churches and communities, only to be tortured, made fun of, belittled and ridiculed throughout history.  Being called all kinds of names and fought against because they claim to love people, but they have too many rules and regulations. Why they don't even know what Jesus taught, do they? Jesus taught forgiveness, not all those rules.

Didn't Jesus say the Jews had too many laws, didn't he say something like “I did not come to change the laws but to explain them to you.”  Over and over, people disagreed, about His teaching. There have been wars, there are floods and earthquakes, and there are bad leaders like Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, Castro, and horrors like slavery, concentration camps and abortion. Each bad leader with their bad ideas had groups of followers or terrorists who would run through the land and kill people in the name of justice or because it is their right to do so. Isn’t their way the right way?

And so it goes from century to century people always waiting for the anti-Christ to appear and then have the return of Christ to put an end to all this unrest, hatred and confusion that we face on a daily basis.

However, what many people fail to realize is that since Christ walked the earth each living soul can either be for-Christ or anti-Christ. Each single soul can follow the example Jesus showed us, living our lives helping our fellow human beings by sharing and caring for this beautiful world we live in and all that God has given us. Or each one of us can live our lives where we will do all in our power to turn people away from the teachings of Christ and by doing so each one of us can then become the anti-Christ ourselves.
