Overcoming injury: Do's and don'ts of the healing process

Muscles ache, bones creek, and the mind weakens. Overcoming an injury is an endurance race of its own. However, do remember that the mind controls more than we think. Exercising the mind through visualization can initiate firing of sport specific muscle fibers. With training, visualization can initiate various athletic performances without bodily movement and allow the mind to know little difference.

The acuity of the visualization varies with every individual. There have been studies that have shown brain activity initiating muscle fiber movement during a visualization trial (Cox, 1999). This study provides empirical evidence that visualization alone can help an individual continue to prepare the body for athletic play.

Therefore, in order to overcome an injury one needs to understand that rest alone will not do the trick. Too many negative factors come into play when patience is solely relied upon. The proper mental approach can enhance confidence, lower anxiety and improve acuity of ones own performance. An injury can be a time to reflect and mentally refine approaches for the future.
