Virgos are often misunderstood. It's quite common for others to take the matter-of-fact way we express our opinions as being arrogant and snobbish. That's not the case at all. We are not above learning from others and we don't think that we are smarter than everyone else. . . even if we give the Jeopardy contestants a run for their money from our living rooms. We just know what we know and have no personal attachment to the information.
And that's why Virgos love a good debate. We can read every book ever published and take every on-line class offered but there's nothing more exhilarating than two minds expressing the unique ways in which each have interpreted common knowledge. One hundred people can memorize the same book but everyone of those people will have a unique way of integrating the information. So, a debate with a Virgo just doesn't end in a boring exchange of facts. It's a wonderful way for two people to get to know how each other's mind works.
Some Virgos, like myself, have more than one Virgo in their natal chart. Having Venus in Virgo, for example, can be very hard to get used to. In a culture where love and sex are treated as separate entities those Virgos with their Venus also in Virgo have a difficult time during puberty. When their friends are letting their hormones rule, the Virgos sit back watching and wondering if there is something wrong with them. Although not at all shy in activities that exercise the mind, the Virgo will be the wallflower in a boy/girl activity. Romance without true love makes no sense at all and, during the teen years when peer approval is at an all time high, the Virgo can become very self-conscious of his or her inability to enjoy the same behaviors as other teens.
Fortunately, maturity makes all the difference in the world. Eventually the Virgo will find true love and settle down to raise a family. Natural nurturers, Virgos also make decent parents. We can discipline without going off the deep end. It is very rare that we'll punish our children in anger. It's not that we're experts at self-control as much as that we rarely experience extreme emotions at all. It's not that big of a deal to see our children misbehave then respond with a discipline that is fair and balanced. We don't take the actions of our children personally. On those rare occasions when Virgos do get angry or become heart broken we go into overload and cannot function. Hiding behind a locked door until rational thought returns is typical behavior for the Virgo trying to grapple with unfamiliar emotions.
For me, it's the third stage of life that has me actually appreciating being a Virgo. The marriage has matured and there's a respect for each other's differences that creates a calm comfort in the house. The children are raised and are giving me beautiful grandchildren to love and nurture freely. I can alphabetize my DVDs and organize my spice cabinet without anyone messing them up. And, thanks to the Internet, I can enter a debate anytime I feel like it. Overall, being a Virgo isn't so bad even if it does take a few years to accept that people will misunderstand our logical, unemotional, slightly neurotic nature. We really are as nice as we seem and that means something in this world.
