Society learns history so that we can find past mistakes, then figure where they went wrong and then learn from those mistakes so we can make society a better place. In the scenario of leaving Iraq once again when they are not prepared for us to leave, is repeating a past mistake.

Now let’s take a quick look at when operation Desert Storm happened in which this was the first time our nation was launching an assault on Iraq soil. On August 2nd, 1990 the U.S led coalition launched the assault into Saddam-held Kuwait to drive his forces out of Kuwait. In which the Gulf War commenced with over 34 countries contributing soldiers and forces to the region. The main goal was to free Kuwait from the tyrannical Saddam Hussein and drive him back to Iraq. This quick war only took one year and was a great accomplishment not only by the U.S but a great step by the U.N. However, what the coalition failed to do was to pursue Saddam and to push the liberation into Iraq. The failure of result to do this allowed Saddam to rebuild his army, fund terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda to conduct terror attacks against the U.S.

Then in 2003 we launched attacks in Iraq with the same mission of taking down Saddam and his forces but, this time we were going into Iraq. However the war that we were about to involve ourselves in was not going to be just with the usual go in and out not remorse. We also had to prepare ourselves for the reconstruction of a country. And we would definitely be breaking new ground in not only warfare but in history. But this war also faced very many difficult situations that we had to overcome especially since the role in media played a large part in this war and it also did not have much support during the war itself.

There is also the question of what have we really accomplished in Iraq? What good have we really done in Iraq? Why did we go there in the first place?

Through our work we have been able to provide the security to regular civilians so that they might enjoy the simplest thought of going to the market, or women feeling safe in public. We have also been able to establish a voting process in the country and have been able to have elections safely in the country. We have been able to get children going back to school without being shot along their way. Electricity, clean water, food, medical supplies and many other materials have allowed us to literally save an ailing nation. From the occupancy of Iraq the U.S in the process have been able to save millions upon millions of lives in Iraq. Through our work we have been able to help countries who yearn for freedom and basic rights are able to enjoy these liberties.

But our work in Iraq is far from finished. We must continue on and finish what we started, for if we decide to pull out before the job is done our soldiers have died in vain, and our work was a waste. Our public must rally once again behind our just and noble cause so that we may accomplish the arduous work in Iraq.

“If we are forced into a war we must give up differences of opinion, and unite as one man to defend our country” –Thomas Jefferson
