Starting an online business requires a great amount of dedication and hard work. Contrary to what most people believe, starting an online business is much harder compared to starting a real brick and mortar one.
The online business arena, due to the dynamics of a globalized market, presents unique and bigger challenges. Aspiring online entrepreneurs should understand that the online business arena is fiercer and more competitive than brick and mortar industries.
Online entrepreneurs are bound to commit mistakes especially during the early stages of the business. In order to be prepared, it is necessary that you know those common online business mistakes before entering the field of online business.
Listed below are five common mistakes committed by online businesses.
1) Insufficient research, market data and business planning
In every business endeavor, it is imperative that you know where you’re standing and where you’re going. Most online businesses think that starting an online business is easy and won’t require research. However, if has been proven time and time again that knowledge regarding the market and the industry is the key to successful businesses.
2) Lack of focus – relying too much on “auto-pilot” systems
Most online entrepreneurial gurus often say that they are working two-four hours a day (some even claims a week) but they earning more than the average corporate America employee. While it’s hard to demythologize their claims, it’s quite easy to say that most of those claims are true only to some extent.
The smart and dedicated online entrepreneur will inevitably achieve the point when he/she has to work for just a minimal amount of time but it isn’t achieved immediately.
The most common mistake of online entrepreneurs is that they work half-heartedly and they rely too much on “auto-pilot” systems. They think that starting an online business is a “build-it-and-they-will-come” system.
3) Early diversification and/or business expansion
Diversifying or expanding an online business early is equivalent to entering a den of lions armed only with a stick cut from a tree’s branch. In short, it would eventually result into failure. Before diversifying or expanding your business, it is important that you’ve already captured a significant portion of the market.
4) Failure to harness the power SEO and social media strategies
The failure to use the readily-available Internet tools that surrounds an online business is certainly a huge business mistake. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and social media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, video marketing etc.) strategies will bring traffic to your online business and might just ultimately spell the difference between success and failure.
5) Being a perfectionist – analysis-paralysis
Being a perfectionist is another common mistake committed by online entrepreneurs. Most aspiring online entrepreneurs are afraid of failing so they become stagnant in the planning and analysis stage of the business.
