Bathrooms are an essential part of our homes and a vital facility for our well being. We cannot imagine how, many years ago, people lived in homes without running water, showers and toilets. We have become accustomed to heading for the shower first thing when we wake up each morning. Brushing our teeth has become part of our daily routine. Using the toilet during the day or night is easy, clean and very hygienic.

The bathroom is the place we keep our bodies clean and well buffed. The bathroom is also a room that we use to relax and unwind after a busy day at work or after sport. We even consider the bathroom be a romantic haven with sensual aromatic fragrances whiffing through the air.

A small bathroom will still meet our needs for sanitary hygiene and cleanliness. However, we can make this room into a quiet and relaxing environment to unwind. Or, we can turn it into a romantic place for two when we want. Decorating a small bathroom can be simple and easy to do just by following a few ideas.

To begin decorating a small bathroom empty the room first.

Empty all cabinets and vanity units. If possible remove cabinets altogether as these tend to clutter the room.

Remove the shower curtain if there is one, and the window treatments.

Then inspect the walls, ceiling, tiles, bath, basin, toilet and shower screen for any dirt, mold, mildew or built up soap scum. Wash and scrub everything that needs cleaning.

Treat mold and mildew with appropriate mold and antibacterial solutions purchased from your hardware store. Remember to follow the directions and also protect yourself with gloves, long sleeves and face mask.

Install a good exhaust fan to assist in keeping your room dry and remove to odors.

Repair any broken or damaged tiles.

Paint the walls and ceilings in a moisture resistant paint that provides mold and antibacterial properties.

Select paint colors for your walls that are light and breezy.

If you have any cabinets or shelving in this room paint them to match the wall.

Keep shelves uncluttered.

Consider lighting that you can dim to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Install a large plain mirror to one wall. This will give the feeling of light and space. It is also quite romantic if you can see the flicker of candle light in the mirror.

Install simple chrome towel rails, taps and fittings.

Buy some nice fluffy towels that look and feel luxurious.

Instead of window curtains and blinds consider an opaque film which will provide filtered light and privacy.

When decorating a small bathroom keep the room clean and tidy, remove clutter, create a light filled room, add some vibrant color with towels and accessories, add air fresheners and beautiful aromas to freshen the room, add some sparkle like chrome taps or towel rails, remember to put things away after use like razors and hair dryers and keep dirty clothes in the laundry.
