The 2010/11 season in the Football League was certainly an exciting season. The Premier League may get the greater worldwide exposure, but there is plenty of excitement to enjoy in the Football League; in fact some people think that it is even more exciting than the Premier League. For clarification, the Football League is considered to be the 72 professional league clubs outside the Premier League. Therefore, these are; all the teams in League Two, League One and the Championship.
Starting with League Two it certainly was an exciting season even at this level of the football pyramid, especially since there is many big clubs at this level that once played at a much higher level. However, the so-called bigger clubs in the division were not involved in the promotion shake-up. Gillingham, Rotherham United and Crewe Alex have all played at a high level in the past, but this trio of clubs all narrowly missed out on a play-off place. Instead it was Stevenage Borough, Torquay United, Accrington Stanley and Shrewsbury Town that competed in the end of season lottery; it was Stevenage Borough that ended up being victorious and sealing promotion. Wycombe Wanderers and Bury won automatic promotion – while Chesterfield went up as Champions. At the other end of the table, Stockport County and Lincoln City fell out of the Football League.
The leading goal-scorers in League Two were Cody McDonald with 25 strikes, Ryan Lowe with 27 strikes and Clayton Donaldson leading the pack with 28 strikes. The leading amount of assists came from Shan Miller with 11, Nicky Law with 12 and Ryan Hall with 16.
League One is filled with some very big names in English football, but a lot of them failed deliver last season. Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic will have both been disappointed to have finished in mid-table. Rochdale, Exeter City and Leyton Orient all had a fairly good season, but just missed out on a place in the play-offs. Instead AFC Bournemouth, MK Dons, Peterborough United and Huddersfield Town contested the play-offs; Peterborough was victories and won promotion. Southampton won automatic promotion in second and Brighton & Hove Albion went up as champions. At the other end Dagenham & Redbridge, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and Swindon Town were all relegated to League Two.
The leading scorers in League One were Ricky Lambert and Bradley Wright-Phillips with 21 goals, Glenn Murray with 22 goals and leading the way was Craig Mackail-Smith with 27 goals.
