Natural treatments to help adjust hormone levels

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is often used to alleviate the symptoms of perimenopause, or the transition to menopause. In addition, certain types of hormone therapies may be used to alleviate the symptoms of andropause, a condition that is still under hot debate, but that describes the point at which age-related changes in testosterone levels usually occur. However, traditional hormone replacement therapy is associated with a number of complications, including an increased risk of breast cancer.

While studies are ongoing regarding exactly what herbal remedies do to hormone levels, and whether they can have an appreciable impact on menopause and andropause, anecdotal evidence suggests that they may be beneficial. More importantly, these natural remedies that help adjust hormone levels are considered safe by the FDA in dietary amounts, without the types of side effects seen in traditional hormone replacement therapies. Some of the same types of natural remedies may also be helpful in relieving the effects of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in women who are still of childbearing age.

Phytoestrogens

Fluctuations in estrogen are largely responsible for the hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness and atrophy, and other such symptoms of perimenopause. Phytoestrogens are compounds that are chemically similar to naturally-produced human estrogen, and many sources indicate that it works in much the same way. These compounds are found in various plants, but are in the highest concentrations in legumes such as soybeans, black beans, and fava beans.

Some other great plant sources of estrogenic compounds include black cohosh (which should never be taken if you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it can induce labor or potentially cause a miscarriage), alfalfa, licorice, and more. A wide range of fruit, vegetables, and common herbs also contain phytoestrogens.

Natural Treatments for Low Testosterone

Low testosterone is generally an age-related condition, or related to hypogonadism. This is also the primary indicator of the onset of andropause. While most men do not have a point in life that indicates a definite, permanent cessation of fertility as women do, andropause may cause psychological issues and sexual dysfunction. The good news is that, with the right therapies, you may be able to live your entire life without serious sexual dysfunction, and you don’t have to accept the psychological symptoms either.
