What I Know About Abortion
I suppose I should wipe my hands clean of this topic, since I have been writing of it for over a half a century. But like Aaron Tipping’s song, “You’ve got to stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything.” I am head-strong and will not fall for anything. I am not one to believe in something just because someone tells me to. I have studied and researched abortion since I was a teenager myself.
In my younger years, on numerous occasions, I have spoken and listened to young girls who wanted abortions and to those who have had abortions. When I was in my early twenties and married, I was not able to have children, and perhaps this was the reason for my interest in abortion and adoption. Later, I was fortunate and blessed to adopt a baby girl, and six years later, a baby boy. I thought perhaps my feelings would change now that I had children; however it only intensified my interest in abortion.
In the last fifty years, things have changed dramatically, but my feelings have never altered. I have written poetry, short commentaries, and editorials in the local newspaper on this subject. None of this has helped in any earthly way in stopping abortions. I doubt that what I have to say will make any difference at all in society, but I will continue to write of it, because it is something I strongly believe in, and I care about a stranger’s unborn child. In truth, sometimes, I wish I did not.
Setting aside religion, and God, my personal belief is quite simple; Abortion is the killing of a potential human being. There is no way anyone could disagree with this statement, even if they believe that it isn’t a child at conception. The fact remains, that it could be, if given the chance.
I have studied both sides of this debate, “The right to life” and the “Pro-Choice” sectors. I have come to understand both sides (though I may not agree with those who are Pro-Choice) I tend to summarize that they believe what they are doing is indeed, right for them. I have also heard and read the many stories about over-population; as well as not having enough resources to bring a child into the world, let along raise one. It is unfortunate that many young girls and woman have to make this decision on their own, as their partners are soon out of the picture. “Who wants to have a child when the father suddenly takes off?) is what one girl had told me. Others have said they were
