There are certainly advantages to hiring a wedding planner, but keep in mind that there are also disadvantages. I will outline here three of those disadvantages in a way that I hope will help you to make a well informed choice about whether or not you will hire a wedding coordinator and so that you will be able to hire a coordinator that you will have confidence in.
1. There Are Some Poor Wedding Coordinators.
Having worked with couples as they have planned their wedding, I’ve learned that there are some good and some poor wedding coordinators. There are a variety of reasons a person may categorize a wedding coordinators as poor.
a. Not organized
If at your first meeting with a coordinator you feel they have come unprepared, noticed that they’ve called you by the wrong name, or you’ve heard them repeat the incorrect date of your wedding, these may be signs that your coordinator is not well organized and they may be more work then help to you.
On the other hand, if that person is able to show you some of their work in a portfolio or they have evidences that they have figured a lot of things ahead of time, you are likely to have someone who will benefit you greatly in the planning of your wedding.
b. Unconcerned about details
Some wedding coordinators may have organization skills but fall into the category of being a poor wedding coordinator because they are not deeply concerned about details.
This coordinator would not notice if one of the groomsmen is wearing his boutonniere upside-down. If this person has buttoned their own shirt wrong or didn’t turn on the air conditioner in the room where you have met with them, you are likely dealing with someone who will overlook an important detail in your wedding.
c.Opinionated
You may want or need a coordinator who will offer their opinion when you ask. Some are hesitant to give any suggestions. But the ones you really want to look out for are those who offer unwanted opinions. You can spot them in an interview when they tell you about bad wedding choices other clients of theirs have made related to colors or styles.
If you select this person to coordinate your wedding, many of the great ideas you have for your wedding will get buried beneath the coordinator’s “better way of doing things.”
d. Socially inept
I’m sure there are certain personalities that work well in the role of wedding coordinator and some not so much. It seems
