Bird Watcher’s Code of Ethics

Bird extinction is enough of an excuse to create a bird watcher’s code of ethics.  A bird watcher’s code of ethics is simply a set of rules that help keep birds and bird watchers happy. Without the code of ethics, a new bird watcher may not have quite the experience if he or she does not follow a set of guidelines.

A bird watcher’s code of ethics draws a boundary line between a bird watcher and the fascinating creatures that swoop, glide, and soar through the air and water.

What code of ethics do bird watchers need to follow to ensure a long lasting hobby like bird watching?

Study the birds that you would like to watch. Bird watchers who study the bird prior to bird watching have formulated a clear understanding of the dos and don’ts to avoid scaring a bird away. Ask an expert on birds to have an idea on the best times of day or night to watch a specific bird. An owl, for example, sleeps during the day; therefore, it would be unethical to disturb an owl during the day by interrupting its sleep. Allow space between you and the bird to keep the bird from sensing danger.

Although birds are wild and free the birds need to feel safe and secure in their personal habitats. To help birds feel safe in their environment, here are three don’ts to consider when you journey out to entertain your fascination of birds.

Never handle a bird’s egg: Just like a mother is protective of her children, a momma bird is just as protective of her little chickadee.  Handling a bird’s egg will hinder the natural process of a birth of a chickadee. Never walk up too closely to a bird; always allow enough space between you and a bird. If you must watch a bird up close, purchase binoculars or another device that allows you to study a bird up close rather than causing it to sense danger and fly away.

Never litter, always pick up trash when you see it on the ground or in the water. Littering not only causes our world to look uncared for, it also releases harmful chemicals that will eventually affect the wild birds that bird watchers are mesmerized by. Never disrespect the rules and regulations relating to hunting or bird watching, the utmost importance is keeping wild  birds safe in their environment.

Following a bird watcher’s code of ethics will promote a pleasant and long lasting experience for the bird watcher and a sense of security for the most intriguing creatures in the world.
