Throwing a luau party means playing games, and traditional luau games are awesome because they fit the theme and provide a lot of fun and laughter. This article will discuss several traditional games you can play at your next luau party.

‘O’ O Jhe

A traditional game for luaus is known as ‘o’o jhe; this is a type of spear throwing game. For this game you will need some sticks, a sandbox filled with sand or dirt, tape, some painted rocks, and a knife. Slightly sharpen the sticks to a very dull point. Then use the tape to mark the line where your guests will throw from. Place the sandbox a distance away from the line. Then place the rocks at various points in the sand box. The different rocks will be worth different point values. Let your guests throw and collect points. The one with the highest score is the winner.

’Ula Maika

This traditional luau game is easy to create and play. All you will need is a garden stake, some rocks, tape, and paint. Simply paint the rocks different colors and hammer the stake into the ground before the party. Provide guests with several rocks of the same color and use the tape to mark the line they will be throwing from. Then let everyone throw a single rock. The one with the closest rock to the stake gets a point. Remove all the rocks and repeat. Continue playing until you are out of rocks and the guest with the most points wins.

Hula Hoop

This game is fun and can be played in different ways. All you need is several hula hoops; they can be bought at most dollar stores and toy stores inexpensively. You can even let your guests decorate their own hula hoops using different colored tape; this makes a great party favor for your luau. Playing games with hula hoops can include timed hula hooping where the longest hooper gets a prize; they can also be used for ring toss games with a Hawaiian flair.

Limbo

Another traditional luau game is limbo. This game is a lot of fun and all you need is some willing participants and a long stick or pole; a broom will do in a pinch as well. Let guests line up and play some fun Hawaiian music. As the guest bend their bodies and go under the pole you can lower the limbo stick until only one contestant remains in the game.

Scavenger Hunt

For a fun luau game that can be played throughout the course of the party try a scavenger hunt. Before the party starts hide several luau themed items such as leis, shells, a marked coconut, or a stuffed parrot. Then provide your guests with
