If you are planning a Hawaiian themed party, you should consider using decorating ideas for a traditional luau. Authentic decorations can really make a difference in the atmosphere of your celebration. This article will discuss several traditional decorations for your luau.
Palm Leaves
To turn your home into an island paradise add some palm leaves. They can be placed inside flower pots, or they can be attached to the walls of your home. Vases can be filled with palm leaves and they can be tied around posts. Palm leaves will add that tropical theme your are looking for when trying to decorate your luau traditionally.
Sand and Shells
An easy and inexpensive addition to a luau themed party is sand and shells. These items can be incorporated into the decorations in several ways. Filling a large bowl with sand and shells makes a nice centerpiece; sprinkle sand on tables and counters for an authentic feel; feel free to spread some sand on the floor as well if the party is outside. Shells can be used for garland and streamers, and they add a true luau feel.
Leaf Mats
A traditional decoration for a luau is a lauhala mat; this is a mat made from pandanus leaves. You can easily buy these over the internet or make your own.
Flowers
An obvious traditional decorating idea for this type of party is flowers. Flowers can come in vines, vases, wreaths, and many other forms, and they can be used to decorate the entire party area. Flowers that are fresh or fake will work, and you can even make your own flower decorations using tissue paper and floral tape.
Ferns and Other Leaves
Right along with the flower decorating ideas, leaves also have their place in traditional luau décor. Again, fake or real leaves work well. Indoor houseplants can also be brought to the party area to add more of a green theme to the decorations.
Leis
The most popular and memorable part of any luau is the lei. A large assortment of leis can be used to adorn all sorts of areas. Leis can be made or bought, and they can be made from fresh items or fake replicas. Flowers, ferns, shells, and nuts can all be used to create leis, and they can be hung all over your party area.
Fire
Fire and sources of fire are another decorating idea that is pretty and useful. Large standing torches, small candles, fire pits, and many other options are available to provide this aspect of your luau décor.
Fruit, Nuts, and Coffee Beans
Fruits, nuts, and coffee beans are a common item for a Hawaiian themed party, and they can be used in a variety of decorating ideas. Centerpieces and garlands look great when you add any of these items. They can also be the centerpieces and focal points of streamers. Try thinking of creative ways to use these traditional luau items.
Bowls and Baskets
Wooden bowls, coconut cups, and woven baskets also play a part in traditional decorating. Add these items in areas needing organization and they will decorate while coming in handy.
Decorating ideas for a traditional luau can add that magical feel you want at your party. For a true luau themed party, stick with traditional decorations and it will be a blast.
