Poetry: Cowboys

New to Texas

We left New England for the Lone Star State,

Rolled in around midnight; so late, so late.

…Can we get the kids back to sleep with ploys?

So much down here is strange and new,

Adobes, tumble weeds, and armadillos too.

…Does every southerner wear turquoise?

The radio’s playin’ songs all depressing and blue,

I’m feeling sorry for that ‘boy named Sue’.

…Will he be able to keep his poise?

If you ask for a longneck you get a beer,

We call cola - soda, but it’s a pop down here.

…Is Royal Crown the brand everyone enjoys?

Crawdads and scorpions are some of the natives,

And this is where the Brown Tarantula lives.

…Are these the South’s simple joys?

Been at the Motor Inn way too long,

Our furniture’s lost; we’re stuck; sad song, sad song.

…Will we ever find the kids toys?

Being woken from our nightly slumber,

By boot stompin’, tobacco chompin’, whoopin’ hollerin’ thunder,

…What could make all that noise?

The Rodeo’s in town; it’s time to git,

Just watch out for all of that brown spit!

….Are these real Cowboys, or are they just decoys?
