Unlike most wars, corporations at wars create a distinct advantage for consumers. By having multiple companies competing in the same areas, they are going to create new services, new features, and lowered costs in order to beat each other out. This resulst in a substantially better product, with more options for consumers, at a much more reasonable price that more consumers can afford.
The reality of this so called, 'war' is that neither company is going to go away. They are fighting for internet supremacy and while they are fighting to determine who controls the internet, neither of the companies are really going directly at each other. Each company has decided to create new services that haven't previously existed or to expand upon services that are already popular. Both companies have already begun a purchase frenzy of established internet companies that provide a wide variety of services. The idea is that purchasing companies that already exist, already have a successful game plan, and already have their own user base, they will be able to add to their overall internet ownership. But for each company it has become a battle that neither will win. They continue to purchase companies in order to one up each other, but they really don't change their overall marketshare in comparison to each other, only in comparison to others which are already lagging far behind.
Ultimately, it will be the consumer that is going to win this war as more and more great services are unveiled that make internet life much more manageable and entertaining. We can only hope that this war continues on for some time, potentially adding new competitors to the field, so that the internet continues to grow in the way that has been. It's only to our own benefit.
