There is only one person who really knows the answer to this question but, predictably, speculation has been rife. People love it when a celebrity appears to go off the rails, there is a morbid curiosity comparable to that which makes people slow down and take a look when they pass a road accident.

There could be any number of reasons that Britney Spears shaved her head. What we do know is that she has been in the public glare since a very young age, her every move has been scrutinized and pulled apart by the press, from debating her breast size to the intricacies of her love life via alleged diet pills, smoking, drinking and knickerless nights out. Whatever anyone says, it can not be easy to grow up with billions of people watching and waiting for you to make a mistake and Britney has had to account for hers to the whole world.

Can anyone blame her if she's had enough?

In a very short time Britney's family life has crumbled, divorce is not a happy experience for anyone least of all with two young children involved. Critics have slated her for everything from her parenting skills to her career to her fashion sense. How many people could deal with this and the end of a marriage?

Maybe Britney has finally lost patience with the world judging her. Maybe she is sick of magazines dictating whether she is "hot or not". Perhaps shaving her head is a way of shedding her skin and making a statement that she does not accept the rest of the world's views on her image. Maybe she has lost the plot and needs rehab. Or maybe she just thinks that bald suits her. But as long as the public insist on encroaching on her private life it's unreasonable to expect her to be the model of propriety. Maybe we should all leave her alone and let her live her life how she chooses. She isn't hurting anyone by shaving her head!
