The location of the hotel was perfect in that it was easy to wander off to different areas of the city from a central point. The downside being that it is not exactly situated in the most pleasant area of town. There are quite a lot of derelict buildings in the immediate vicinity, but having said that, it didn't feel particularly dangerous at night.
The Metropolitan is situated just behind City Hall and one block from the Eaton Centre mall where there is access to the subway.
Also within walking distance is Chinatown and the trendy Queen West area.

The hotel has a quite impressive entrance with a doorman who guided us to the underground car park ($9 per day). An elevator took us to the check-in area which was elegant and sumptuous, with marble-clad walls and floors, and a Chinese theme to the decor with small statues with prints and tapestries adorning the walls.

There was a coffee-shop and small restaurant leading off from the reception and this was also accessible from the street. Guests could help themselves to complimentary coffee from a machine in the reception area...but it wasn't worth the bother- the coffee was rotten!

Check in was very efficient and we were soon unpacking in our room.

The room was clean and well furnished but a bit small (read 'tiny') although that is to be expected in a city centre. It was furnished in an antique style which is not to my personal taste but I understand that some of the rooms were of a more modern design. There was a huge desk, handy if you're there on business, but for us it took up far too much space in an already cramped room.
Again on a business theme, there were 3 phones in the room including 1 in the bathroom. The room was equipped with a small, built-in wardrobe and there was also adequate drawer space.
We had a small CD player but as we had no CD's it was as useful as a chocolate tea-pot. The TV had cable and 'pay-for-view' movies and the room had an expensive mini-bar. Speaking of TV's, our TV didn't work properly, but we reported it on our way out for a quick look around and on our return, 45 minutes later, it had been replaced.

The room was clean but I found the colour scheme, a sort of nicotine yellow, a little dull and depressing.

The bathroom was clean and well equipped with towels and toiletries, bathtub and shower, and a small sink below the large mirror.

We had a clear view of the CN Tower from our room - or we would have if the windows had been cleaned sometime in the last decade.
There was no coffee/tea maker in the room which I thought was a little tight.

There was an excellent pool, hot tub, sauna etc., and a very well equipped fitness room. I used the pool a few times and mostly had it to myself - the fitness room I left to others more in need.
Apparently the hotel's restaurants are very highly rated but we didn't try them, there were far too many dining options elsewhere in the city.

In summary, this hotel was a good base for exploring Toronto due to it's central location and its proximity to most of the attractions of the city, but it wasn't a room I would want to spend an awful lot of time in - not that it was bad, more because it was a little small and not altogether welcoming.
