Who is God?

If we actually are to answer this question we must not look at it as who we think God is, but who God is according to scripture.  Unfortunately most of us (even Christians) tend to put God into our preconceived ideas of what we think He is.

Isaiah 6:1-5 reads, “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.  Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.  And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.  And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.  Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King of the LORD of hosts.”

Above all God is holy; we are to regard Him as holy and see ourselves as totally worthless and sinful creatures.  It is then, that we can understand a little of who God is. If we think of Him as a loving grandfather type that will save everyone and be a genie in a bottle to give us what we want; we are clueless to His nature because He is so holy that He cannot tolerate or be around sin of any kind.  No matter what the sin is, say as little as going 5mph over the speed limit or as much as murder; they are all the same to God and He must punish us for them.

Yes, God is loving, He is forgiving, but holiness is the key to who He is and the other attributes fall into place afterwards.  A holy, righteous God must mete judgment to His standards, not ours.  In Isaiah 45:22 it says, “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.”  God always was and always will be; he knows the beginning from the end and every speck of happening in between.  This is why before He created the earth and man; He made a plan wherewith sinful man could be saved.  He knew Adam and Eve would sin, He knew man would make up thousands of religions; He knew that most men would not believe who He is and choose not to follow Him.  He is merciful and long-suffering.  He allows the sinner every opportunity to come to Him because He doesn’t want even one to perish.
