The Detroit Lions have been my favorite team since I was six years old and I seen #20 play. I later came to find out that #20, was in fact the great Barry Sanders. While Barry Sanders played, the Lions had a decent, or sub-par team. They looked great at times, and other times, they looked like duds. But these days, the Lions almost look like duds everytime they step on the field, so what's the difference?
For starters, an immediate quarterback need is not very essential! Everyone says that Brady Quinn belongs in Detroit but, the fact of the matter is, Detroit doesn't need him unless they want to spend another few years on the lower part of the totem pole. I would love to see Quinn in Detroit, but the undenyable fact is, Detroit doesn't need them now. Jon Kitna is doing fine, I personally believe that if he had a decent line, and a veteran wide reicever, he could be in the playoffs. Anyways, the Lions need to trade their number two pick and get (hopefully) two mid 1st round picks, and maybe a 2nd round pick. With this, they should draft an offensive lineman, a very athletic defensive lineman, and a durable, big-game exposed defensive back. These simple additions, will end up to be key when the Lions are searching for their wins, especially later in the season.
After the draft, there biggest addition should be a veteran wide receiver! Roy Williams is great but come on, he needs someone to help coach him from veterans standpoint. This will drastically improve the Detroit Lions passing game, I believe that with that simple addition, they will be a force in the air. They should sign some fairly decent back up offensive lineman also, since in past years the offensive lineman can not seem to stay healthy. Then with the running game, Kevin Jones is really good, but again, they need a veteran back there to help him out. I say the Lions sign a bigger veteran back that can help Jones with his vision, and contribute to the team on short first downs, goaline offense, and when Jones if having an bad day.
Defense is a toss up I guess, but I think that the biggest problem was the lack experience, and the pretty bad offensive that would leave the defence with a short field to defend. The Lions should maybe do some trading or shopping around and find a veteran, NFL elite middle-linebacker. Watching Zach Thomas play, I believe he fits the system perfectly, but I don't know how the would acquire him. With all of these additions, the Lions would drastically improve, Josh McCown is still very young and can still learn from Kitna, and maybe end up with a pretty decent career. But I think the most important step in getting a better team, is the draft, do not draft a quarterback, the Lions do not need one.
