Your extracurricular activities may be the deciding factor between you and another student. Colleges look at a student's entire package when making their decisions for acceptance. Well-balanced individuals that show perseverance and hard work will catch their eye. A person who has spent all four years in a particular activity whether it be sports, drama, band or art it will not matter. They will see that this student is not one to try something and give up. This is the student that sees things through and gives it hisall. A couple of activities that a student participates in every year will speak loudly to the admissions counselor.
Those that assist the less fortunate or needy will gain respect as well. Be sure to list activities that you have participated in to raise funds for non-profits or help those in your community that are not able to help themselves. Perhaps your love is for animals and you walk dogs every week at the animal shelter. Maybe you have a sibling with a particular illness such as diabetes or you have had a family member that has gone through cancer treatment, so you have given your time at hospitals or fund-raisers for these non-profits. List the time that you have devoted to helping these groups.
Any areas where you have shown extra initiative or leadership, whatever the activity, be sure to tell the college about it. Maybe you have been a buddy for a student with special needs or tutored students having trouble in math. Any time that you have given to others on a regular basis list it on your application. It will help paint a complete picture of you for the school. They will get a better sense of what you stand for and how you have managed your time along with your studies.
